Browser and Encryption Frequently Asked Questions
What is encryption and why do I need it?

Encryption is the process of converting data into a secure format for transmission. Encryption scrambles data that is sent between OppenheimerFunds.com and your browser. Browsers with 128-bit encryption provide the best protection when transmitting confidential data over the Internet.

Your browser should support 128-bit encryption in order to provide secure communication between OppenheimerFunds.com and your browser.

How does OppenheimerFunds.com secure confidential information?

OppenheimerFunds.com encrypts your data with Internet security technology called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This feature will let you know when the page you are viewing is secure. It works by scrambling your data as it travels over the Internet to our server, to reduce the risk that someone else can "see" your confidential information.

Encryption is achieved through an electronic scrambling technology that uses a "key" to code and then decode the data. When we say that OppenheimerFunds.com supports 128-bit encryption, we're referring to the length of the "keys" used to encrypt and decrypt the data. The longer the key, the more secure the encrypted data. Basically, a 128-bit key is like a 16-character password. And a 16-character password is practically impossible to decode.

Why does OppenheimerFunds.com support 128-bit encryption?

We value the online security and privacy of our shareholders. That's why OppenheimerFunds.com requires that customers have one of the highest levels of browser encryption when accessing secure areas of the site. 128-bit encryption is one of the highest levels of encryption.
