OppenheimerFunds is proud to serve our communities through an active, hands-on approach. “The Right Way to Change Perspectives” philanthropy program received more support than ever in 2016, as employees rolled up their sleeves to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
60 employees volunteered to work overseas as part of the firm’s partnership with Cross-Cultural Solutions, an organization that believes in changing the world through “small, personal acts of kindness and selflessness.” Our volunteers worked in a center for the elderly in Peru and orphanages in Costa Rica and Brazil.
Other employees taught math to students in Rochester and New York City as part of the firm’s partnership with the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath). The “Infinite Potential” program is designed to promote mathematical literacy and affinity among America’s youth. Volunteers included OppenheimerFunds CEO Art Steinmetz, who taught basic math concepts to first and second graders.
Employees also volunteered quality time to 60 other organizations as part of VTOP, the firm’s volunteer time-off program, and increased their matching gift donations to more than 650 charities.
Beyond the numbers, the stories of the volunteers speak volumes about the impact of the experiences on the community and themselves.
“This is not a documentary on TV where you think, ‘Oh how sad for them,’ and change the station. This is real, very real. And we have been given the opportunity to shed some positive light in their world,” said Data Architect Nora Birt, during her experience at Los Pueblitos, an orphanage in Costa Rica. “Yes, there will continue to be volunteers coming through to help them build their trust and confidence, and hopefully help them mature into good, caring and productive adults. But it is our turn now, to share in that process to help them along their way. How better to enrich your own heart than to help rebuild another, even if it is just for a week.”
