Financial Planning 101: Beneficiary Update

Our site’s new beneficiary designation feature lets you easily add, modify or remove beneficiaries in just a few easy-to-follow steps, instead of printing and mailing hard-copy forms. Be sure to have your intended beneficiary’s full name, date of birth and Social Security number on hand when you log in.

Failing to name an heir for your assets could force your family to endure probate: the time-consuming, expensive and emotionally draining legal process of settling an estate. If your assets go into probate due to missing or unclear instructions or invalid beneficiary designations, any favorable tax benefits may be lost. Make sure your designations are up to date, especially if you’ve been widowed or divorced.

Keep in mind:

  • You can access online beneficiary information for: Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP, SARSEP, SIMPLE IRA and 403(b)
  • In certain cases, some shareholders may still need to complete and mail in a hard-copy Change of Beneficiary form. This includes anyone who wishes to modify special beneficiary designations (such as per capita or per stirpes) and anyone who is married and a resident of a community property state or territory (AZ, CA, ID, LA, NV, NM, TX, WA, WI and Puerto Rico) and wishes to name a non-spouse primary beneficiary
